The Magic of Romcoms: Why are They So Damn Relatable?

I recently watched Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. The child in me is overjoyed, considering the first movie came out in the early 2000s, and I have been an admirer ever since. In this latest instalment, Bridget has finally found the love of her life- not once, but twice. She even created a miniature Bridget in the process. Did you notice her cute, quirky and confident daughter? That’s the kind of confidence Bridget could never quite muster.
Though I loved seeing her journey unfold, I couldn’t help but feel disappointed that we never could see what domestic bliss looked like for her and Mark- something that had been in the making for more than two decades!
Watching the film made me reflect on why romcoms appeal to me so much, and I realised it’s never just one reason. These stories often revolve around a relatable woman who is trying to navigate life. She is struggling in her career, her relationships or both (aren’t we all?). Her love interest is swoon-worthy and irresistibly charming. She has a strong female presence in her life – a best friend, sister, or mother – who stands by her side no matter what. The sets in the movies are impeccable- Nancy Meyers set the golden standard, and the overall tone is light-hearted and comforting.
As the story unfolds, she faces various challenges- some she overcomes, others she doesn’t. But by the end, she has gained clarity on her priorities. She wants a wholesome one that is not consumed entirely by either her relationship or career, but is instead balanced. Most importantly, she has a better relationship with herself. The movie feels like an awakening of sorts, and I love that it happens in a happy setting.
Which is your favourite rom-com of all time?
